Snorkeling: There is a wide diversity of sea life and corals at the many different beaches on St. John. Full and half day snorkel trips are available aboard motor and sail vessels. These can get you to the spots unreachable from shore, which tend to have even better snorkeling. Scuba: Diving around St. John is excellent and because of our optimum conditions, is best described as fun, safe, and easy. Typical visibility varies from 50-100 feet and water temperatures are a comfortable 79 to 84 degrees. On most dives you will find Elkhorn coral, pillar coral, sea fans, sponges of every hue, and a wide variety of tropical sea creatures which may include the moray eel, hawksbill turtles, spotted eagle rays, and spiny lobster. The deeper dives offer gorgonians and other deep-water coral with wall-like vistas. Daily dive trips are available as well as training and trips for the non-certified divers. Island Hopping: One of the most popular trips, is the full day excursion to Jost Van Dyke. It's like stepping back in time. Jost Van Dyke is an exciting place to explore. There is no better way to enjoy the beauty of the islands than by sea. Be sure to bring your passport so you can take advantage this outstanding activity. Fishing: Off shore light tackle fishing is a great way to spend a half or full day. There are numerous charter boats to choose from. Boat Rentals: St. John has a few small craft rental companies with vessels varying from 12' inflatables to 26' hard bottoms. Explore St. John's Past: One can guide themselves through the Colonial days gone by at the Annaberg and Cathrineberg sugar mill ruins which still boast their windmill towers with distinctive, decorative features such as vault ribs and banded wall openings in red plaster. Also check out the mysterious petroglyphs, rock carvings from the island's pre-Columbian period. Taxi Tours: This is a great way to see the island and learn more about the history of St. John. Rates and itineraries vary and some drivers offer group rates. Hiking: There are numerous trails on St. John maintained by the National Park Service. Inquire at the Visitor's Center for maps and schedules of interpreted trail hikes. Mountain biking and kayaking: A few local companies offer some great guided trips for both of these recreational sports, or you can rent, and explore on your own. Shopping: Our duty free status makes St. John a shopper's paradise. There are several jewelry stores and many gift shops with imported goods and local crafts located in the heart of Cruz Bay. Night Life: There are many bars and restaurants located in Cruz Bay, as well as a few in the East end's Coral Bay. The bars are hopping at night, and dress is casual. One can usually find live local music on any given evening.
